WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #143: Breaking Stigma, One Story at a TimeOver on CBC Saskatchewan, Grade 11 student Fiona Babar wrote about her teacher, Andrew Foreman, sharing his story of living with OCD – and what it mean to her. Can’t say it much better than this:“As a student, I often made the assumption that teachers can never understand what I am going through as a teenager. How could someone that stands at the front of a class and talk for seven hours a day possibly understand? In that moment, Mr. Foreman took down that wall between himself as a teacher, with his own personal struggles, and us as students.“In the past, I've felt like I couldn't talk about my own mental health. People aren't comfortable with the topic. It hit me how Mr. Foreman had changed the narrative and turned our classroom into a place where people could comfortably ask questions, and get answers in a real and honest way. “ ‘Mental health is like our physical health, some days we feel good physically, some days we don't,’ he later told me. ‘Just like some people have serious health problems, some of us have mental health disorders that are more problematic, more frequent, than some people are used to’.”The kids are okay (or are going to be). -------Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program is helping more than 100 companies and more than 10,000 construction professionals better understand mental health. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details. ... See MoreSee Less

Langford is absolutely booming – it’s one of the fastest growing communities in B.C. So the new South Langford Elementary School, designed for 480 Grade 1 to 5 and 80 kindergarten students, will be a welcome addition to the community. Kinetic Construction will complete the building next year, and Kinetic president and CEO (and ICBA Board member) Tom Plumb took ICBA VP-Regional Mike Davis on a tour of the site today. The 4,178 sq m four-storey building is oriented east to west to take advantage of natural lighting as well as maximize useable space on a smaller-than-average sloping site. The school includes 16 classrooms and four kindergarten spaces, along with a daycare. A full-sized soccer field is situated on the west side of the site. The design team wanted to inspire students to explore their environment through natural play and discovery. The school is imagined as a tree house embedded into the rugged terrain on one side and perched on the other side, with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The façade is an articulation of the light that filters through the vertical gaps between the trees in a forest. There is a strong focus on sustainability with this project, with a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through extensive use of mass timber, increased insulation in wall assemblies, strategic use of heat pumps and heat recovery systems, and photovoltaic cells on the roof. The mass timber structure visually matches the project’s sustainability ambitions, and reduces embodied carbon in construction. This is going to be an outstanding part of the Langford community for decades to come! ...
