Our Chief Economist, Jock Finlayson, has been busy digging into the BC Budget, and the news isn't good. From Jock:Any lingering doubts as to whether government is now the principal “growth industry” in British Columbia can be safely set aside after last week’s provincial budget. Among the highlights – and lowlights – that caught my eye:💸 the largest operating deficits in B.C.’s history over the next three years – even bigger than at the worst point of the 2020-21 COVID shock;📈 substantial increases in program spending, along with fast-rising debt-servicing costs;💰 a further expansion of the NDP government’s already ambitious capital spending plan; and,⬆️ a vertiginous increase in the accumulated public sector debt over the forecast horizon. The economic backdrop for the 2024 budget can only be described as subdued... WELLNESS WEDNESDAY #141: Mental Health First AidLast Friday, 8 members of ICBA’s leadership team – including me! – took a Mental Health First Aid, designed to help us identify the signs of mental health strain and give us tools to intercede and help. But more than the tools, it gave us confidence to ask supportive, but vital, questions. Asking “How it’s going?”, but doing so with intention and actual listening ears – this is something we can all do. Coincidentally, this video popped up on my social feeds from Norwich City Football Club. It’s a perfect example of why it’s important to do those check-ins and ask those questions. It doesn’t take a lot to be the person who looks out for someone else. But it may save a life.-----Each week, ICBA’s Jordan Bateman reflects on what we’ve learned as we participate in ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program. ICBA’s Workplace Wellness Program is helping more than 100 companies and more than 10,000 construction professionals better understand mental health. This program is free for all ICBA members – check out icba.ca/wellness for details. ... See MoreSee Less

All of us who work in and support the construction industry want to see every worker go home safe at the end of every day, and we all work to make that happen. But today it didn’t, and we are brokenhearted by the tragedy at Oakridge. Over the past year, we have heard over and over again about the incredible time our ICBA members and supporters had at last year's ICBA Gala, with four-time Super Bowl Champion quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana. Terry especially connected with our audience, with his energy, love for football, and gregarious personality. We have been fortunate to welcome several outstanding speakers in the past (Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, and Russell Wilson), but none captured the room quite the way Terry did.So, back by popular demand, we welcome Terry Bradshaw to our 2024 ICBA Gala, on Friday, May 3, in Vancouver. And this time, Terry is bringing his old friend, co-host of NFL on FOX, Super Bowl champion, and NFL Hall of Famer: Howie Long. Tickets are now on sale for ICBA members. Visit icba.ca/gala2024 to get your seats for what will be another entertaining night with two sports legends. Our ICBA Gala has become one of Canada’s premier events celebrating the construction industry.
